The Butte County Democratic Party response to the guilty verdict in the case of the murderer of George Floyd.
4/20/21 Chico CA A press release
The Butte County Democratic Party welcomes the guilty verdicts against Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd. We believe this decision not only marks progress towards equal justice in our society, but it also serves as a reminder of the work that still lies in front of us.
With a police officer convicted of murdering a Black man, Americans have reached a pivotal moment in centuries of institutional racism. Although long in coming, this moment is only possible because of the work of countless activists and organizations demanding that our country—and every citizen—lives up to the aspirations of our founding documents, stating all men (and women) are created equal.
This moment marks progress, but not an endpoint of the critical work toward fundamental change. Necessary reforms include de-escalation training for police, more resources for mental health services for our communities, more education for our children and greater access to economic opportunities.
As we recognize this moment, let us recommit to the work of building a society that celebrates and honors America’s diversity. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said, "No one is free until we are all free." We must continue the unfinished work of realizing the dream of this nation that encourages all people to be free to achieve their best selves.
We hold a place in our hearts for George Floyd’s family and for all families who have suffered the loss of a loved one to police violence.
In peace.
